Project CARS Game of the Year Edition is a Sim-Racing Birthday Cake

PCARS-GOTY-PS4Has it been 12 months already? Project CARS launched 365 days ago on May 7, 2015 (that crafty leap-year). To call the current version a vastly different beast than the launch title is to be putting it mildly. While many will recall various issues with the title over the past year, what can’t be argued is Slightly Mad Studios’ continued support of the game. Wrapping that all up in a neat package is the Game of the Year Edition, available as of today for PS4, XB1, and PC.

If you missed the initial GOTY announcement, a short refresher on what it offers over the vanilla version of the game:

  • Over 50 new cars (including the new Pagani Huayra BC and Zonda Revolucion), bringing the total to over 125
  • 4 tracks (including the Nürburgring Nordschleife + GP layout), for a combined 35 unique locations and over 100 layouts
  • 60+ community-created liveries
  • 500+ features and improvements that have been added since launch

The new track layout and both Paganis are now available to players of the existing game, grouped into the Pagani Nürburgring Endurace Expansion Pack ($3.99). Let’s take a quick look at two of Horacio’s creations:

The Revolución is a cleverly-named evolution of the bonkers, track-only Zonda R. That car came equipped with a howling, 750hp version of the V12 engine Mercedes campaigned in endurance racing in the 90’s. It set a lap record at the Nordschleife, a stunning 6:47.48. The Revolución introduces a further 50 horses into the corral, along with an improved aerodynamic package that includes a Drag Reduction System. All of this adds up to a seriously exciting package.

Not to be out-done by its older brother, the Huayra BC should prove an interesting foil to the Zonda. Named after Pagani’s first client, the late Benny Caiolo, the uber-Huayra boasts an identical horsepower figure, with a fair chunk more torque thanks to the turbos breathing on its V12 engine (also the same size as the Revolución’s). The eye-catching active aero panels push the body into the ground at speed, an easier task here as the BC has dropped 132kg off the original’s 1350kg curb weight. In the real world, only five lucky people will ever own a Huayra BC, but that won’t be the case for Project CARS players. It still benefits from some exclusivity, however: this is the only game you’ll find the car in, currently.

So Ive bought the game also bought some DLC and there asking $70 for this. Is that correct?

This is a completely separate release of the entire game that contains all of the DLC so far and all of the patches, rolled into a single package.

    2. FS7

GOTY Edition is US$40. Pretty good deal considering the base game is US$30 and all DLC bought separately totals US$50.50.

Correction: There are 36 environments and 99 tracks in the game, but they got the car count right.

And this is my dilemma, I’ve just bought a ps4 and do I get the GOTY edition or wait until V2 is released.

If V2 is a year away then no issue, but any sooner and I think I’ll wait.

Any confirmed pcars V2 release dates folks?

Not sure what to tell you Andy, I have PCARS, Driveclub, and tried and deleted The Crew. The beauty of the way the games look on the PS4 is very good. If you are into tuning then you will like PCARS I think. Want to just get into a car and race with no hassles then Driveclub. After playing the available racing games on the PS4 I have decided that at this time I still think GT6 is the best one out there. Easier to navigate the game, set up and run lobbies, ability to text chat in the game, more tracks, more cars, community section, and club events, not so complicated tuning since I already understand it after 4 years. If they would have released a PS4 version of GT6 instead of waiting 2 or more years for GT Sport to come out I think GT6 would be the best one on PS4 too. So I play every other game I have on the PS4 and GT6 on PS3 for our club and league racing. Not to mention that a lot of our club members have not purchased a PS4 yet and I enjoy racing with them after 4 years vs trying to start something new on PCARS or Driveclub. Keep your PS3 handy incase you end up feeling like I do. We are desperately waiting for the next GT to come out and hoping it will still be the best one out there.

Andy, there is no confirmed release date for V2. If you are looking for a simulation game then get the GOTY edition of PCars. Simulation means it’s not just pick up and play and be fast, it will take some adjustment. Tuning actually works, unlike GT6 for example where some works, some doesn’t and some is backwards. Simulation also means you have to pay attention to your car if you want to get the most out of it. You can’t cook your tires because grip levels change when you overheat. You can’t fry your brakes as you’ll lose braking power if you do and they won’t have as much braking power until they heat up.

In short, if you’re looking for the pick up and play simplicity of the GT series, forget PCars. If you’re looking for a more in depth simulation, get it.

I wish Nordschleife + Sprint Course was available as well. I miss a time trial mode where I can see my own lap times (just like GT).
